Internet Service Providers in Echo Park

Echo Park has two primary internet providers: AT&T and Charter Spectrum. AT&T has the fastest fiber internet option for the neighborhood. Their Fiber internet service is recomended for most households due to the 1,000 Mbps download and upload speeds, which is significantly faster than competing plans from Spectrum cable.

Provider Speed Price Availability Contact
AT&T 1000 Mbps $49.99/mo. High availability (844) 886-4258
Spectrum 930 Mbps $39.99/mo. High availability (855) 243-8892
Starry Internet 200 Mbps $50/mo. Low availability (888) 231-9403

AT&T recently expanded in the Echo Park area and now offers fiber plans to virtually all buildings in the neighborhood. AT&T has the fastest internet-only plans, and as of 2020 is offered contract-free.

Spectrum’s cable service is also contract-free, but has lower speeds, particularly when it comes to upload. AT&T Fiber provides 1,000 Mbps “gigabit” download and upload speeds for around the same price as Spectrum’s entry-level plan — which offers only 200 Mbps download and 10–20 Mbps upload performance.

This table shows the key comparison points of the most common AT&T and Spectrum internet plans in Echo Park:

Plan NameSpeed Down/UpPromo PriceFinal Price
Spectrum Internet200/10 Mbps$49.99/mo$69.99
Internet 10001000/Variable Mbps$49.99/mo$59.99

As you can see, the prices are fairly comparable. Keep in mind that both AT&T and Spectrum use “promotional pricing” to sign up new customers in Echo Park. Be sure to compare the final price and not just the “starting price,” since with both providers, your cost goes up after the first year.

The price of AT&T’s basic DSL plan goes up 20% after months, averaging out to $55/month over two years. The AT&T Fiber service is priced the same, so how good a deal that is really depends on their fastest speed at your building.

Spectrum’s base plan compares at a 40% jump after 12 months, meaning you’ll pay an average of $60/month over two years.

Internet Coverage in Echo Park

The only locations in Echo Park that can’t get fiber internet service are those close to the intersection of the 101 and 110 off Alpine street, which have spotty coverage on some blocks.

Larger apartment buildings also sometimes can’t get fiber, since they often have exclusive contracts with Spectrum for service within the building. In these cases, even the older AT&T DSL or “IPBB” service can’t be had, since they can’t access the building at all, even if there’s a fiber line directly outside.

Echo Park hills
Echo Park is extensively wired for AT&T fiber service as well as Spectrum cable. Neighborhoods like Echo Park with lots of hills may have line-of-site issues delaying 5G internet rollout. Neighborhood pushback against installing more cell towers and small cells could also delay 5G.

The historic Victorian homes area around Carrol ave and up into Elysian Heights is all wired for AT&T fiber, although installation can take some time since lines are buried or run behind houses in order to maintain the historical appearance of the neighborhood.

North Echo Park and Frogtown along the LA river also have AT&T fiber service, with lines running along Blake Avenue and Ripple street.

Here’s a snapshot of all AT&T plans that are available in Echo Park. Note that AT&T offers the fastest speed they can service at one price, rather than having you pick from multiple plans.

How installation works when moving to echo park

AT&T fiber service requires an installation visit, so be sure to order service a few days in advance if you can.

Spectrum offers installation, but if you’re in a rush you can pick up a self-install kit at their stores around LA or even install over the phone using your own modem and router, if you have one already.

Some historic streets in Echo Park have buried utilities, so in some cases they will need to come and bury a line through your yard rather than run it down to the house from a pole.

Echo Park plaque about utilities
Echo Park was the first "scenic underground wiring district" in California, if local plaques are to be believed.

This is uncommon though, as at this point most buildings in the area are wired for both AT&T and Spectrum service.

What is the fastest internet plan in Echo Park?

The fastest internet plan in Echo Park is the Internet 1000 gigabit fiber plan from AT&T. It is recommended for most homes in the neighborhood, since it offers several times the download and upload speed of competing cable plans, for around the same price.

Internet alternatives in Echo Park

There are three alternative internet services in Echo Park in 2020:

  1. Starry Internet: This provider offers fixed wireless service to some apartment buildings in the area. Their 200/200 plan is a good value and cheaper than AT&T, but they only serve a few locations currently.
  2. Sonic.net: Sonic is an AT&T reseller in Echo Park, and offers fiber internet service over AT&T’s fiber lines. It is a bit more expensive, but Sonic has very well-regarded customer service. If you are a “power user” with a home office, it’s worth investigating.
  3. Earthlink: Earthlink is also an AT&T reseller in the Echo Park area. We don’t recommend them at this time because Sonic gives you the same advantages (no data caps) with better customers service (which is local to California, rather than in a mysterious bunker somewhere offshore).

Is Verizon 5G home interent available in Echo Park yet?

Verizon 5G home internet is not yet available in Echo Park, but they’ve been expanding quickly around LA and we expect it’ll reach the neighborhood soon. It’s already being piloted nearby in the downtown area, and has been slowly growing in coverage since 2018. Verizon 5G will be similar to Starry in terms of your experience as a customer and the speeds delivered, but with different equipment and more installations for single-family homes.

Page Summary
  • AT&T Fiber service is the best internet-only option for most homes.
  • Spectrum TV plans are less expensive than AT&T TV, but the internet speeds are slower with Spectrum in Echo Park.
  • Historic victorian homes in Echo Park are mostly wired for both providers and should have no special issues with connecting service. Lines may be buried rather than run over poles in some locations.
